On another note, it is good to know that the Răcoasa Town Hall, in partnership with the county administration, will organize on Monday, July 20, starting at 17:00, a commemorative event dedicated to the heroes who fought, 98 years ago, on the Mărăști Battlefield. The program of the event includes both a military ceremony and a classical music recital. It is a tribute paid to the heroes who lost their lives at Mărăști in the first major battle won by the Romanian Army.
On July 22 (July 9 old style) 1917, at Mărăști, began the attack of the 2nd Army, led by Marshal Alexandru Averescu. This battle would change the course of the First World War. Historians say that “without Mărăști there would have been no Mărășești”, because the battles of Mărăști brought the first victories for the Romanian Army in the First World War. There were ten days of fighting in which 1,469 Romanian soldiers lost their lives, and another 3,052 were wounded.
